Home Depot recently named Glenn Wooten of Ashburn, VA The Home Depot Hometown Hero (award details). This is a national award that was given to recognize his humanitarian efforts for aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Last year, as a member of the Virginia faith based organization, Christ In Action, Glenn created the “Convoy of Compassion” to provide relief to those suffering through the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Following is an interview of why although living far away from Katrina's direct effects he decided to get involved and what still needs to be done.

How did you become involved in the relief effort?

I like many others watched the images on television, and could not believe the suffering that was going on. I could not just sit back and do nothing. I contacted Christ In Action and found out they were already down in the Gulf Coast region working to help those whom were affected by the hurricane.

What is the “Convoy of Compassion”?

Upon my arrival to the Gulf Coast, I was really struck by the devastation. I had the opportunity to work on some homes, work in a medical clinic and hand out supplies. These things allowed me to talk to many people and hear their stories.  They were telling me about the needs that they had.  With a list of supplies that was requested by people, I put together a drive that people could bring these items and we would have them delivered to a distribution location in Mississippi. I named the effort “Convoy of Compassion” because of the caring and love you must have for a person to want to help them out in a time of need. We are brining an 18-wheeler full of love.

What did you see and learn in the Gulf Coast?

I saw total devastation. The images on TV did no justice to what was really going on. The amount of people that had their lives changed in a matter of hours. The inability for people to receive the help and services that they needed was a big surprise to me. The one thing I did learn was how much of a difference faith based groups made. I heard more than once, “if it had not been for the faith based groups we do not know how we would have made it”

Congratulations on being named Home Depot’s “The Hometown Hero”.

Thank you. This award really goes to all of those who supported me. Without family, friends and other supporters, we could have not been effective in our works. Winning this honor however gives us the exposure we need to keep people’s attention on the problems that still exist.

Tell us about the fund raising campaign and the “Trust In The Lord” song.

Trust In The Lord is a song sung by singer Marc Staggers. He has donated this song to be used to raise money to continue the relief effort in the Gulf Coast. The money will be used to help not only bring supplies but rebuild lives. This song will be available on websites to down load and at some events to purchase.

Anything else that you would like to share with our readers?

I would like to say that, there is a lot more work to be done. Please don’t think that you are not needed. There are plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer or just get involved. This tragedy has left devastation that will be around for a while. Besides money your time is truly valuable to those still in need
